Bureau meets measles injection target

A TOTAL of 1.7 million children in Shanghai, including 3,928 foreigners and 1,447 from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, had received measles vaccinations since September 11?as part of a program that has been designed to eliminate the disease nationwide, the Shanghai Health Bureau announced yesterday.

Shanghai fulfilled its target of having at least 95 percent of eligible children between eight months and 14 years old inoculated.

A small number of children suffered adverse reactions, accounting for 0.058 percent of the total, and most had slight problems. Four children suffered serious adverse reactions such as fever and convulsions.

"Prompt and appropriate measures have been taken and all four children are now in a stable condition," said Song Guofan, an official from the Shanghai Health Bureau.

The program was conducted between September 11 and 20 by 369 vaccination clinics set up in neighborhoods and 610 medical teams going to around 2,000 schools.

Approximately 1.67 million local children received the shots during the 10-day period and 23,305 children who missed the injection for various reasons were given the vaccination later.

The program is set to end on Friday, by which time the health authorities will have traced all those who missed having the injection.
