Campaign launched on passive smoking
A CAMPAIGN which aims to protect pregnant women and newborn babies from the effects of second-hand smoke has been launched by the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The aim is to educate their families about the dangers of smoking and create a healthier environment for mothers-to-be and their newborn babies.
Some 2,000 families in districts of Jiading and Minhang are taking part in the 10-month pilot trial.
The center may extend the program after evaluating the results.
The center will be sending health staff to visit the families in their homes and teach them about the dangers second-hand smoke presents to pregnant women and newborn babies and give guidance to family members on how to stop smoking.
They will also be carrying out health checks on pregnant women and newborn babies to evaluate the effects of the trial campaign.
Surveys in 2007 found about 29.7 percent of local people were smokers with over 61.8 percent of them male and 1.2 percent female.
Homes, workplaces and public buildings were the top three places where people were exposed to second-hand smoke. More than 60 percent of women suffered passive smoking at home.
Second-hand smoke can greatly increase the risks of low birth weight, deformity, delay in intellectual and behavioral growth, asthma, pneumonia and other diseases, experts said.
The community-based pregnant women-related smoking intervention program is not the only campaign in the city focusing on getting smokers to quit the habit.
The Chinese Association on Tobacco Control is to be involved in a series of health lectures on smoking inside the Expo zone during the event and other measures in a bid to make the city extravaganza the first smoking-free Expo.
