Cancer rate on the rise

THE incidence of colorectal cancer in Shanghai was the highest in the country, tripling the nation's average, experts told a medical conference on colorectal cancer prevention and control yesterday.

There has been a rapid increase of colorectal cancer in the country. The prevalence is four times that of 40 years ago due to unhealthy lifestyles, a fatty and high-sugar diet, lack of exercise and poor awareness. Some even delay visits to doctors while having symptoms such as blood in their stools, experts said.

There are up to 400,000 new cases a year in the nation and this is growing by 4.2 percent annually, far quicker than the 2 percent increase at the international level. More than 6,000 new cases are found in Shanghai annually and about 50 percent of patients will die of the disease.

Early detection of the disease is vital, doctors said.
