Cancer-vaccine trials
SOME local hospitals will participate in a clinical test of the cervical cancer vaccine later this year, experts said at an international conference on the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer in the city yesterday.
Medical experts from China and abroad discussed the importance of promoting cervical cancer screening and the effects the cervical cancer vaccine could have in China. Cervical cancer is one of the most common and deadliest cancers for women.
"The cervical cancer vaccine has been available in the United States and many European countries for a few years," said Dr Jerome Belinson from the US-based Cleveland Clinic's department of gynecology and obstetrics. "It can dramatically reduce the chances of getting cervical cancer if a woman receives the vaccination before becoming sexually active. Since 2006, about 10 million American women have received the vaccination. We suggest girls aged 12 are vaccinated."
