Caucasians sought for rare blood

SHANGHAI Blood Center is inviting volunteers and Caucasians to donate blood for a rare blood group to save a 59-year-old woman who is in critical condition with a liver disease.

The woman is scheduled to undergo a surgery next Wednesday and her hospital in Beijing is seeking the help of Shanghai Blood Center to collect 400 milliliters of the Duffy blood type for the surgery.

The center hosts the nation's rare blood bank and had recruited two people to donate 600 milliliters of the same Duffy blood type to the woman in June for her previous treatment.

Only two in every 1,000 Chinese have this rare blood group. Among Caucasians, it is 20 percent. Local foreigners are being urged to come forward and donate blood.
