Center lowers fees for flu patients
SHANGHAI International Medical Center started accepting patients without appointments yesterday at its pediatric department after almost every hospital in the city were flooded by patients with flu cases.
The medical center in Pudong New Area previously only accepted patients with appointments. The center also lowered its fee for patients visiting the pediatric department.
The Shanghai Commission of Health and Family Planning also urged people to choose facilities closer to their homes instead of flocking to the three city-level children’s hospitals.
Each of the three hospitals are taking almost 9,000 patients a day, which is far more than their capacity. The long queues last for as long as six hours.
There are 141 medical institutions that offer pediatric medical service in the city, and 76 have emergency treatment service, the commission said.
It said nearly 80 percent of children arriving to the hospital last week were not serious and could have been treated at community clinics.
“I was told to wait four hours. My daughter is suffering,” said a woman named Alice Chen, who took a day off from work yesterday to take her daughter, who had high fever, to hospital.
