Chinese Idol competitor has talent for compassion

Two people who were injured in an earthquake in Lushan, Sichuan Province in April both received free surgery yesterday in a Shanghai hospital.

Li Zongzhai, a 49-year-old farmer, fell from the second floor in the tremor and injured his left eye. He could not afford the treatment because both his wife and son have cancer and the family is extremely poor.

Another patient, Luo Junyu, 16, lost two front teeth as he ran from his house during the earthquake. His father was recently found suffering from cancer and the family had no money to repair his teeth.

The two men received free treatment at Shanghai Dream Plastic Surgery Hospital. "Li’s eye surgery was performed by specialists from other hospitals," said Xu Beihua, president of the plastic surgery hospital.

"Losing two front teeth can affect a person's outlook and deal a psychological blow to the boy," Xu said. “In addition to their free surgeries, we will offer their families long-term care and help.”

Also yesterday, a 10-year-old girl from Sichuan received free plastic surgery at Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital to repair scars on her back caused by a falling into a frying wok seven years ago. The scars made her skin tight, limiting the movement of her arms.

Her suffering drew media attention during a TV talent show and she was brought to Shanghai for the surgery. “I want to lift my arms and dance like other children. My dream is to become a dancer but I also want to become a doctor to help others in the future.”
