Chinese women score high in hygiene awareness

CHINESE women are more health-conscious and more active in promoting hygiene education, according to a global hygiene survey released in Shanghai yesterday.

About 66 percent of Chinese women recently refrained from using a public swimming pool or gym shower and 38 percent of Chinese women recently refrained from using a public toilet because of poor hygiene standards. Both figures are much higher than the global average, according to a survey conducted by the Swedish SCA Group on 7,000 people in nine countries, including Australia, China, France, Germany and Mexico.

The survey found two-thirds of the women considered they played a more active role than men in improving the sanitation of their communities. In China, more women consider they are the major force to improve local sanitation conditions.

About 47 percent of Chinese women believe that maintaining good hygiene is vital for personal health, 15 percent more than Chinese men and 9 percentage higher than the global average.
