Chopstick removed from stomach
HALF of a wooden chopstick was removed from a 50-year-old local man after he swallowed it 28 years ago, officials from Tongji Hospital said yesterday.
The man, identified as Wang, suffered a medical emergency last Monday and was rushed to hospital, where doctors found a section of chopstick in his stomach.
The chopstick had severely damaged the wall of his stomach and left the man in critical condition due to an internal hemorrhage.
Since the chopstick had gone rotten and warped, doctors couldn't remove it directly through the throat.
In order to avoid extreme invasive surgery, a doctor looked for the chopstick through a gastroscope and was able to grasp it. Another doctor made a small cut on the wall of stomach, allowing the chopstick to be removed with minimal trauma to Wang.
The patient told doctors that he swallowed the chopstick while under extreme stress. Because he feared surgery and didn't feel any ill effects, he decided to leave the chopstick where it was.
The patient is recovering well after the surgery, said doctors at the hospital.
