City bureau puts more medicines on insurance list
THE number of basic medicines covered by local government's medical insurance system is to be double that on the national list announced last year.
Medicines on the local list will be sold at least 15 to 20 percent below current prices after Shanghai's health care reform is approved by the city government late this year or early next year, local health officials said yesterday.
The national list includes 307 basic Western and traditional Chinese medicines, while the local draft adds another 380 kinds to take account of Shanghai's health standards and public demand, officials from Shanghai Health Bureau told a Sino-France symposium on medical sciences and public health yesterday.
The local draft includes medical resource integration, medical facility rearrangement, establishment of a citywide health database for residents, the introduction of family doctors, state-owned hospital reform and a better public health service system.
The city will improve a basic public health service including offering free colon cancer screening at communities, free hepatitis vaccination for residents over 60 and comprehensive screening for newborn diseases, said Xu Jianguang, the health bureau's director.
Shanghai has a much higher health capability and medical service system than the national average and the lifespan and mortality of newborn babies and pregnant women has been in line with developed countries.
"However, Shanghai is also facing many challenges due to the rising number of the elderly and people's unhealthy lifestyles given the high rate of smokers, alcohol drinkers and obesity," Xu said. "Rehabilitation, elderly care, mental health care and high-end medical facilities are still lacking in the city. Which will be covered in the new health care reform."
