City ideal for solar eclipse viewing

SHANGHAI will be one of the best cities along the Yangtze River for viewing the longest total solar eclipse in 2132 years, the Fujian Modern Express reported today.

Astronomy enthusiasts from Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States have booked rooms in hotels in Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province and Tongling in Anhui Province to observe the more than five minute phenomenon on July 22.

The city is planning special events in People's Square and the plaza at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, which will offer good views of the eclipse.

The last time Shanghai witnessed a total solar eclipse was in 1575 and next one is due in 2309.

Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hefei and Hangzhou are all in the eclipse belt.
