City leads way in drug development
SHANGHAI has built the world’s largest public compound platform, with more than 2.2 million compounds for new drug screening and development.
The announcement was made by officials at the National Forum on New Technologies in Drug Discovery yesterday. Since the platform was set up in 2008 with 600,000 compounds, the platform had become a key resource for scientists on drug development home and abroad, they said.
At least 10 new drug candidates had been developed by Chinese scientists from the platform, said Wang Mingwei, director of the Chinese National Compound Library and also director of the National Center for Drug Screening.
“Our major targets for new drug development is in the fields of central nerve system, tumor and diabetes, which are all leading diseases in the nation and the world,” Wang said.
“One new drug has been approved by the authority for phase I clinical trial and another is waiting for the approval,” he added. “We are working hard and a bunch of China-developed new drugs are expected to go through clinical trail and go into international market in 10 to 20 years.”
Today, scientists from 14 countries are scheduled to launch a tropical diseases diagnosis and treatment network in Shanghai for new drug development on tropical diseases. The headquarters will be located at School of Pharmacy under Fudan University.
