City marks its first in voluntary organ donation
THE city’s first voluntary organ donation after death was performed at Changzheng Hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday, Shanghai Red Cross announced this morning.
The 54-year-old donor, surnamed-Huang, a resident of Chongming County suffered bleeding in the brain and was treated at Chongming County Central Hospital on Sunday. After the family learned the patient could not be saved, they planned to donate Huang’s kidney to his son, who is undergoing treatment at Changzheng Hospital for chronic kidney failure.
After tests found Huang wasn’t a match for his son, the family decided to donate both of Huang’s kidneys and the liver to save patients like his son.
They contacted with Shanghai Organ Donation Office, which arranged the patient’s transportation to Changzheng Hospital, which is a qualified for organ donation and transplants and has a medical expert group to evaluate the donation.
After Huang died on 11pm on Tuesday, doctors harvested three organs, as witnessed by officials of Shanghai Red Cross, which coordinates organ donation in the city. Officials sent the donated organs’ information to the nation’s unified organ distribution platform and three local patients on the waiting list received the organs.
One kidney and one liver were received by patients in Changzheng Hospital and one kidney was received by a patient in Zhongshan Hospital.
All the three transplant surgeries were successful and recipients are in stable condition.
Previous organ transplants in the city have been from living donors, for example, to a relative, or organs harvested from executed prisoners, a practice being phased out with the new donation platform.
