City reports 11 new H1N1 cases

SHANGHAI reported 11 more cases of swine flu yesterday, the most in a single day, the city health authority said.

All 11 are in a stable condition in hospital. Their close contacts have been put under medical observation while others are being traced.

The new cases bring Shanghai's total of confirmed H1N1 patients to 61, and 26 of them have recovered.

The latest case was a 13-year-old Chinese girl who had been studying in Canada. She was a close contact of the 49th patient and was put under observation at home on Thursday. She developed a fever and sore throat at about 4:30pm on Saturday and was sent to Shanghai No. 5 People's Hospital for quarantine.

A family of three from the United States was detected with fever on Saturday. They were put under medical observation on Wednesday.

The father, 45, and two daughters aged three and eight were US citizens and close contacts of the city's 39th patient.

Two female Australian citizens and a Canadian man were also among the latest 11 cases. The 58-year-old Canadian, who works in the city, developed a fever of 39.4 degrees Celsius on Friday and was sent to hospital the next day.

Three female Chinese students who were studying in Australia and a Chinese man from the US were the other victims.

Chinese mainland reported 58 swine flu cases yesterday, raising the total number of H1N1 infections to 414.
