City reports 1st H7N9 case in 2015

SHANGHAI’S first case of H7N9 bird flu this year was reported over the weekend.

The Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said a 69-year-old local man, surnamed Zhang, was confirmed to have the infection on Saturday and is undergoing treatment.

However, it did not say how or where Zhang became infected. Close contact with infected poultry, such as at live poultry markets, is a common source of transmission.

The previous case was reported in December, when a 38-year-old local man, surnamed Sheng, was confirmed to have the infection on December 6.

He was earlier reported to be undergoing treatment, though there has been no recent update of his condition.

Sheng was the ninth human case of H7N9 last year, with the remaining eight cases reported in January.

Seven people died of the virus in Shanghai in 2014.

Last year, Shanghai introduced a ban on the live poultry markets during the period from the Spring Festival to April 30 in an effort to prevent H7N9 spreading.

However, Jing’an District completely banned live poultry businesses last July and Huangpu District adopted the same measure later.

Guangdong Province in southern China yesterday reported two patients infected with H7N9, one of whom has recovered. Food safety authorities there said they would expand restrictions on live poultry sales.

According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission figures, in the first 11 months of last year there were 306 cases of H7N9 diagnosed across China, and 130 people died of the virus.
