City reports 6 swine flu cases

THE Shanghai Health Bureau reported six new cases of swine flu yesterday, bringing the total to 67, including 36 who have recovered and were sent home from hospital.

The new cases all involved people who flew in to Shanghai from other countries. All patients undergoing local treatment for the H1N1 virus were in stable condition last night.

Authorities placed 42 people who had been in close contact with the new patients under observation and were still searching for others.

Including the Shanghai patients, 27 new swine flu were reported yesterday on Chinese mainland, bringing the total number to 441.

Epidemiologists have warned of a "very high" risk of outbreak in densely populated communities.

The Ministry of Health issued a document last Wednesday saying that, in case of a rampant spread of the virus in local communities, it would switch to monitoring the "group activities" of each community instead of closely tracking and quarantining individual patients. It also suggested that mass activities in communities could be suspended or canceled.
