City residents not exercising enough
A survey by Shanghai University of Sport showed that one-third of Shanghai locals do not exercise at all each week while 38 percent exercise only once a week.
The college's health experts suggest people exercise three times a week to stay healthy. But the survey showed that less than one in every 12 locals does so. Fully 92.5 percent do sports or other exercise less than three times a week.
About 98 percent of the respondents said they "don't have time for sports or exercises."
Han Dong, associate professor of the training college of the university, said most residents don't think their health is good. Han said his team surveyed 784 Shanghai residents, and 70.2 percent of them consider their health to be average while another 25.3 percent describe it as "very bad." Only 4.5 percent believe they are in good health.
Besides lack of time, other reasons for not exercising were "lack instructions," "no habit for sports," and "too weak to exercise."
Male residents in Shanghai are getting fatter, but the city remained at the top of the country in health quality, according to the 2010 National Health Report released last month. The report showed 94.7 percent of people in Shanghai were healthy, while the average for the country was 88.9 percent.
