City to amend body donation law to increase organ transplants
LAST year 1,698 people signed to donate their bodies for scientific research or their corneas for transplant and 472 people realized their wish, according to the Shanghai Red Cross Society, which handles body donations.
Since body donation was initiated in Shanghai in 1982, 31,327 people have signed agreements to donate their bodies or corneas, and 6,090 of them had fulfilled their promise, Red Cross Society officials said today, the Body Donation Day.
The officials and medical experts have proposed to amend the city's 11-year-old body donation law so that organs from donated bodies can be used for transplant, such as liver, kidney and heart.
At present, people can only donate corneas for transplant but the rest of their bodies are used for medical research, teaching and clinical anatomy.
