Clean pool puts a smile on your dial

THE Shanghai sanitation watchdog will rate the cleanliness of all the city's swimming pools with signs including a "smiling face" and a "bitter face".

"Smiling face" means the pool has an excellent sanitation condition record, "flat face" hints good conditions while "bitter face" reminds swimmers to be cautious of the sanitation there.

Those without such a "face" signal will face punishment, according to Sanitation Supervision Office of Shanghai Public Health Bureau. Beauty parlors, hotels, bathhouses will also be covered later by year end.

The office will review the sanitation situation on a regular base. "Smiling face" swimming pools will be checked at least once in two years while "bitter face" pools will be checked at least twice a year.

Air-conditioning systems, towels, slippers, health certificates and valid hygiene licenses will be covered in the check list.

Those with 90 marks or above out of 100 will be ranked as A level with a "smiling face" tag, 70 to 89 as B level with a "flat face" tag while 60 to 69 as C level with a "bitter face" tag.

The Ministry of Public Health issued the Public Sanitation Evaluation and Measurement Guide on January 16. Last year 43 swimming pool facilities in the city were ranked as "excellent" in sanitation, according to a trial program.
