Crayfish poisoners fined in Chongming

FISHING and agricultural authorities in Chongming County in April and May identified four cases of people using pesticide to catch crayfish.

The perpetrators were fined a combined 2,600 yuan (US$415) for dumping fenvalerate into streams, which acts as a poison and deprives the crayfish of oxygen. The creatures respond by climbing out of the water where they can be easily caught, news website xinmin.cn reported.

Due to the low levels of poison in the crustaceans — which is also rinsed away after capture — detecting such cases is difficult. Authorities have, however, promised to step up their inspections and do all they can to stamp out this type of fishing.

Cong Jian from Shanghai Ocean University’s college of food science and technology said that as well as being harmful to people’s health, pesticides like fenvalerate are dangerous to the waterway ecology.

The freshwater crustaceans are mostly found in brooks and streams, and are a popular dish, especially in summer. In the peak season, Shanghai restaurants charge about 50 yuan per 500 grams.
