Digital platform to improve drug safety
RESIDENTS will be able to check the manufacturer, production batch number and circulation record of medicines with a smartphone after downloading a free application as a national program to introduce digital supervision of drugs takes shape.
Medicines covered by the health insurance system along with anesthetics, vaccines, mental health drugs, traditional Chinese medicine injections and blood products will initially be covered in the project.
Sun Xianze, vice director of the State Food and Drug Administration, told the BIO Convention in Shanghai yesterday that the system will cover all medicines by 2015.
"The digital supervision system is an important project in the nation's drug safety plan," Sun said. "Instant drug checks, supervision of adverse reactions and the re-evaluation of drugs on the market are all crucial components of the plan to ensure drug safety and protect the public's health."
Once the application is downloaded, a user can scan the bar code on the package of medicines to see the data.
Also, the website www.drugadmin.com will be available to both government officials and individuals to check the source and authenticity of medicines. Currently, the application and website will only be available in Chinese.
Shanghai Food and Drug Administration officials said the system will help authorities detect counterfeit drugs earlier and issue recalls quicker.
