Doctors say plum stones can't cleanse intestines

LOCAL hospitals are warning people not to blindly follow some folk remedies and swallow plum fruit stones to cleanse their intestines.

Dr Zhang Fanzhi at the Xupu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Pudong said they received many visitors in recent days, asking whether swallowed plum stones can scour and clean their stomach and intestines.

"Plum fruit can stimulate bowel movement but the fruit stones have no medical effects," he said. "People with digestive problems can have danger if they swallow the stones."

Doctors also warned that excessive eating of plum fruit can result in stomachache as the fruit is acidic and people with a history of gastric disease may suffer from gastroenteritis.
