Father's fury over baby's toes horror
THE father of a two-month-old boy is seeking compensation from a local hospital over the loss of three of his baby's toes. The family is asking for 700,000 yuan (US$102,497) while the hospital has offered 80,000 yuan.
On March 27, the five-day-old boy's left foot got stuck in a drain of a swimming pool when he was attended by a nurse at Putuo District Maternity and Child Health Hospital, where the boy was delivered.
The father, Zhu Bin, said: "We tried several times and eventually pulled the foot out which was filled with blood."
The boy was rushed to Shanghai Children's Hospital where doctors found the big, second and the fourth toes were severed and needed to be reconnected. But the toes failed to heal and the boy had to have them amputated.
An official at the Putuo hospital acknowledged a nurse's negligence had caused the accident. "But it was just an accident. Nearly 90 percent of the new born babies choose to take this practice. The nurse was fired and we are negotiating with the parents on compensation."
But Zhu said yesterday: "We will sue the hospital if it can't give us a reasonable compensation in line with my baby's suffering."
