Female passenger from Canada being checked for flu symptoms

SHANGHAI health authorities are checking a 24-year-old Chinese woman who arrived in the city yesterday on a flight from Canada, suffering from flu symptoms and a high temperature.

Another two passengers on the same flight who were suffering high temperatures have been cleared of H1/N1 flu and 157 passengers who sat near the two on the aircraft have been allowed to leave a city hotel where they were detained for health checks.

The remaining 70 passengers are waiting for the test results on the woman, who has a Chinese passport and is surnamed Qi. Entry-exit officials said she is believed to be suffering from the flu and experts are now working on diagnosing the exact type of flu.

Three passengers, one a three or four-year-old Asian girl with a Canadian passport, who were running temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius were taken to Pudong New Area People's Hospital yesterday.

The China Eastern Airlines flight from Vancouver landed at the airport at 2:55pm yesterday, and passengers were told they could not disembark until their temperatures had been checked.
