Fitness center members look for refunds
THE Breeze Yoga & Pilates Center shut its doors in December and now about 300 fitness center members and employees are looking for compensation.
The Breeze Center postponed reopening several times after shutting its two outlets in the city, saying they were being refurbished. But the owners and staff have not been seen since early February, according to the Shanghai Morning Post today.
One of the owners of the People's Square center has filed a claim saying the center had not paid rent or its water and electric bills for two months. Center members have complained to consumer protection organizations and the Industry and Commerce Administration Department.
The center had outlets in the People's Square and Hongqiao with nearly 300 members. Membership cost between 4,000 yuan (US$585) and 6,000 yuan.
One woman surnamed Wang said she paid 4,500 yuan for membership of the Hongqiao outlet on December 2. She was phoned on Christmas Eve and told the center was being upgraded and re-decorated and would re-open on February 3. Later she called and was shocked to learn that the manager had disappeared and several employees had not been paid.
The Hongqiao center manager surnamed Wang could not be contacted, the report said.
A dance tutor surnamed Chen said she had not been paid since last November when center management had told her they were discussing transferring the center to a larger fitness group and would pay her all of her salary after the deal.
The Industry and Commerce Administration Department is investigating the case.
