Forum hears of robotic future
A COMBINATION of advanced technology together with high labor costs and an array of jobs unsuited to humans means that the industrial robot sector has huge scope for expansion, delegates at the Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai heard yesterday.
The development of industrial robots has become a national strategy as it represents China’s efforts to upgrade its industrial structure.
“It’s a buzzword in China and the world,” said Qu Daokui, president of the Siasun Robot & Automation Co, at the two-day forum at the Dongjiao State Guest Hotel that ended yesterday.
China has a market size of at least US$1 trillion after it became the world’s biggest industrial robot market last year, said Qu, who featured on the panel of speakers at the forum.
Industrial robots are already widely used in manufacturing, in sectors such as the automotive industry.
There is also huge scope in their use producing semiconductors, consumer electronics and in jobs where conditions are dirty and dangerous and “not suitable for human beings,” said Qu.
Meanwhile, surging labor costs have become challenges for Chinese manufacturing, industry insiders said.
Interdisciplinary research and international cooperation were major topics at the forum that attracted 2,000 delegates, including government officials, business executives and scientists.
