Free vaccine cuts measles incidence by 73.5%

THE number of measles cases dropped by 73.5 percent last year from 2010, thanks to a nationwide campaign to give free measles shots to children aged eight months to 14 years old, Shanghai Health Bureau said today ahead of the National Vaccination Day.

Shanghai has been providing free vaccination against 12 infectious diseases since 1978.

The number of hepatitis-B carriers dropped from 9.75 percent of the city's population in 1992 to 7.18 percent in 2006. The prevalence is 0.96 percent among children under five years old.

The bureau said free vaccination has helped reduce more than 30 million hepatitis-B patients in the country.
