Fruit stone nearly killed an elderly man

A 91-year-old man had a pointed stone of a jujube date removed from his esophagus, which pierced the air tube and put him in critical condition.

The Huadong Hospital said today the elderly patient surnamed Huang has been discharged from the hospital after recovery and it warned people be cautious when eating the fruit with a pointed stone.

Zuo Gang, a hospital official, said the patient was sent to the hospital after he accidentally swallowed a jujube stone. Doctors found his esophagus was pierced by the sharp object.

"He could die any moment if no surgery were given to remove the stone," Zuo said. "Considering his old age, we decided to make an invasive surgery or he could die during an open-chest surgery."

The stone was extracted from the esophagus with the use of an endoscope.
