GSK launches molecular research into TCM

GlaxoSmithKline, a UK-based pharmaceutical multinational, announced today that it will conduct innovative molecular research on traditional Chinese medicine and develop new drugs for the global market.

It is the first time that an international pharmaceutical giant expressed strong interest in TCM and planned to carry out a thorough research on it.

"We don't simply renovate the production skills of TCM, but conduct research from the very start -- from finding effective compounds to developing new drugs," said Zang Jingwu, the head of GlaxoSmithKline's China R&D Center in Shanghai.

"Based on the experiences of practicing TCM in China, we will use molecular compound technology in TCM research and drug development," Zang said.

TCM is hard to promote in foreign countries due to its complex formula and the difficulty of extracting effective compounds and explaining its mechanism, he added.

New drugs developed from TCM will be sold not only in the Chinese market but also in the American and European markets, said Zang, whose R&D center has developed five new neurological medicines which are on clinical trial.
