Gallstones plague 10% Shanghai adults

ABOUT 10 percent of Shanghai adults are suffering gallstones and the percentage is increasing due to local people's fatty, high-cholesterol diet, health experts told an international conference on biliary surgery and hepatobiliary surgery in the city today.
For people over 80 years old, the incidence rate of gallstones could be as high as 50 percent.
"People with three Fs -- over forty years old, female and fat – have higher risk of gallstones," said Dr Wang Jian from Renji Hospital. "Women are more likely to have gallstones due to the hormone."
Healthy lifestyle, personal hygiene, control of chronic diseases like diabetes are all important to prevent and control gallstones, experts said.
A national guideline on gallstone removal surgery will be drawn at the meeting.
In a separate conference on hepatitis B treatment, experts said only one tenth of China's 30 million hepatitis B patients are receiving medical treatment and only 1.85 million are receiving antiviral treatment, the most effective therapy for the chronic disease.
The conference marked the fifth anniversary of the nation's first guideline for hepatitis B treatment and debuted Entecavir, a low drug-resistance antiviral drug for hepatitis B infection.
