Guo's home but banquet must wait
FIVE Fudan University students on an exchange program in Mexico returned to Shanghai on a chartered flight yesterday.
Guo Mengchen, a 22-year-old engineering major, is now under seven-day medical observation at Yichen Hotel in Pudong New Area.
After hours of waiting at Tijuana Airport, he finally landed in Shanghai yesterday evening.
The first thing he did was to contact his family.
Looking back on his long journey home, he said it was a unique experience that would benefit him for life.
"I can now chill out with every emergency," Guo said.
After swine flu broke out in Mexico, schools there suspended classes. Shortly after, Guo and his schoolmates decided to return to China.
But they found that all Aeromexico Airlines' flights to China had been canceled.
They took a China Eastern Airlines flight to Tijuana to wait for the chartered aircraft from China.
He was in frequent touch with his mother, Pan Yihui, who works in Shanghai. He kept asking her when the chartered plane would arrive, said Pan. On May 5, Guo and his friend learned that the chartered flight was on its way.
Many of Guo's classmates called his mother for updates on his situation.
"They are planning to throw a reception banquet for him," said Pan.
