Health and family top women's poll
HEALTH and family are the most important things for local women, while having a gorgeous figure and a beautiful face is the second to last thing they care about, according to an online survey that recently polled 2,611 women.
A good family, financial independence and a great marriage are the three most important things a woman can achieve, said the respondents.
A government-run Website (www.smmail.cn) carried out the survey in the run-up to yesterday's International Women's Day.
Seventy-nine percent of respondents said good health was the most important thing to them, while 73 percent chose family, followed by their children's education, the health of family members, their income, their job, their marriage, mental status and family finance.
Only 447 women, or 17 percent, said beauty was their top concern. The only thing less popular than beauty was the miscellaneous category labeled "others."
The Website didn't reveal background information about the correspondents. Since smmail.cn is a government-run Website and its main purpose is to give information about government policy, its users may not represent a broad section of Chinese society.
As far as boyfriends or husbands are concerned, 91 percent of the women said a sense of responsibility to the family was the most important attribute for a suitable partner. Health and a good personality were the second and third most popular requirement.
A high income was listed as the sixth most desirable quality.
The women said their three biggest difficulties were achieving a balance between love and reality, whether or not to have a career, and knowing what to buy.
Whether to marry or not and whether to divorce were the least popular concerns.
Local psychologists said the choices reflected local women's need for security and love.
"I suggest more women work on achieving inner peace and develop a stronger sense of worth," said Shan Li, an instructor who helps people applying for a psychologist license. "Caring about one's family and one's well-being are healthy concerns."
