Hospital to review UV lamps after fears

A HOSPITAL is to review how it uses ultraviolet lamps for disinfecting the air, after nearby residents said they feared the light could damage their health.

A resident living next to Shanghai Bright Eye Hospital on Gubei Road complained that the hospital conducts UV lamp disinfection without pulling down the curtains, resulting in residents seeing the distinctive blue light every evening.

"UV light is harmful to eyes and skin, so we worry that the light from the hospital may affect our health," the resident surnamed Zhu told the Xinmin Evening News.

A spokeswoman at the hospital insisted there was no safety issue but said she would check with officials to clarify the UV working procedure.

Officials from other hospitals said UV lamps can be safely used in enclosed areas without people, regardless of whether curtains are drawn.
