ID card needed to buy drugs containing ephedrine
LOCAL residents who buy medicines containing ephedrine, a cold drug ingredient, will be asked to show their identity card and have their name and ID number registered in a nationwide campaign to curb the practice of extracting ephedrine to make methamphetamine.
Shanghai Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) said today the national administration issued a notice on controlled use of ephedrine-containing medicines last Wednesday and asked provinces and municipalities to work out local rules to wage the campaign.
So far, drug administrations in Zhejiang and Beijing have announced detailed rules requiring real-name registration when buying medicines containing ephedrine and each purchase is limited to five small packs.
SFDA official Du Bing said the five-pack-per-purchase requirement complies with a local rule issued by SFDA in 2008. "Considering the large number of expatriates living in Shanghai, we took them into consideration when drafting the rule," he said.
