Innovative ideas at fair

A YOUTH innovation fair held in the city over the weekend has attracted thousands of visitors with its display of creative ideas from young people born since 1990.

The 24th Intel Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Innovation Fair featured ingenious designs such as a marine oil-pollution treatment system, an automobile-exhaust power-generation device and a device to help people park their cars in tight spots.

The car-exhaust device, made by three students from Xiangming High School in Luwan District, has been granted a patent.

The device uses the temperature difference between a car's exhaust and its cooling system to work a thermoelectric semiconductor chip and generate electricity.

"We had the idea of turning the heat from the car exhaust into electricity for long time," said Zhang Lizhong, one of the three designers.

"But it took us two years to finally put it into reality after many different designs and experiments."

More than 700 inventions, 120 best-practice ideas, and 120 designs for robots were submitted to the fair and 358 were given awards.
