Kids come first at new high-tech hospital

THE new Shanghai Children’s Hospital on Luding Road in Putuo District opened for business yesterday.

The 550-bed facility, which features state-of-the-art technology, has been designed to be more child friendly than its predecessor. Though open only on a trial basis, it yesterday offered more than 300 outpatient services.

The theme of the hospital is “intelligent service.” Beside each bed is a computer system that offers health education to parents, entertainment for patients and even billing information.

The system is linked to a WiFi network and patients can use the iPad provided to contact doctors and nurses.

Later this month the hospital plans to launch a cellphone-based registration and payment system, it said.

Once fully operational, from June 1, officials expect the hospital to handle about 6,500 outpatients per day.

“I like this hospital,” said a 3-year-old girl who was treated for a cough yesterday.

“There are trees, flowers and animals on the wall. It’s like a kindergarten.”
