Kindergarten hit by illness

THE Chongming education authority will hold a parents' meeting after 32 children at a local kindergarten fell ill.

The county education bureau will hold the meeting at 3pm today at the Chenjia Town Central Kindergarten where at least 32 children have reported dizziness, skin allergies, bronchitis and bleeding noses since the beginning of May

The symptoms, which also affected several teachers, coincided with the beginning of construction work near the kindergarten. Workers have been applying asphalt on neighboring roads since then.

According to Xinmin.cn the kindergarten was filled with the smell of the sticky, black viscous liquid.

The authority will also hand out medical reports on the sick children to their parents at the meeting.

Doctors from the local Xinhua Hospital examined the children and teachers last Monday. The medical reports, which came out today, show that several teachers have problems involving their hearts, skin and bronchial tubes, according to an official surnamed Huang with the bureau.

He added that work at the construction site has been halted. Work will recommence but more carefully.
