Leukemia girl meets her angel after recovery

A 16-year-old girl was cured of leukemia after receiving umbilical cord blood donated by a boy in Shanghai and she finally met her angel this week, officials from the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank said today.
Zhang Jiani suffered leukemia in 2005. Unable to find a matching donor in the adult bone marrow bank, she sought help from the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.
Umbilical cord blood donated by a newborn baby, Xu Xijun, proved a perfect match for Zhang and a transplant was conducted six years ago.
According to the international practice, a recipient cannot meet the donor until five years after the transplant because that is the time required to declare a full recovery from leukemia.
Wei Yulin of the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank said they were very happy to arrange the meeting of the two children.
