Maker in US recall dismisses concerns
CEREBOS Pacific may seek the cooperation of the relevant Chinese mainland authorities to assure city consumers its Brand's chicken essences are safe after some supermarkets in the United States took the products off their shelves.
The US Department of Agriculture had demanded a recall of the products due to "issues with import regulations" last week.
The health supplement manufacturer said yesterday that the recall was not due to food-safety concerns.
"We are handling the issue with the US importer and the USDA and would raise the import application again as soon as possible so imports can resume," said a spokesman for Cerebos Pacific. "Brand's products sold in domestic markets are all from the Guangzhou plant while the recalled products are made in East Asia. The recall was in the US only."
But after hearing about the US recall, the Shanghai NGS Supermarket (Group) Co decided to stop selling two Brand's products yesterday - the traditional chicken essence and chicken essence with cordyceps - at its 3,500 stores in eastern China "to protect consumers' rights," the retailer said.
Convenience stores affiliated to the NGS group, including All Days and Kedi, also took the products off their shelves.
Other supermarkets such as Carrefour and Wal-Mart are selling Brand's products as usual.
"We hadn't received notice from the relevant authority to withdraw them from market, said Li Jing, a public relations manager at Carrefour. "Sales of the products have not been affected."
Carrefour spokesman Hu Minghua said the company would be keeping a close eye on the issue and communicate with relevant authorities before making any decision.
The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said it was also watching the issue closely.
