Most Chinese need multiple medications for high blood pressure

Only 30 percent of hypertension patients in China are able to keep their blood pressure under control using one medicine, while 70 percent need a combined therapy with two or more medicines, medical experts said at a medical conference in the city.

"The advantage of combined therapy is to improve the effectiveness of treatment and avoid adverse reactions," Dr Xie Jianhong of Zhejiang Province's People's Hospital said at the forum. "For hypertension patients who also have diabetes, chronic kidney disease or coronary heart disease, combined therapy can bring more benefits."

The Chinese guidelines for hypertension treatment recommend use of a calcium channel blocker as the basic medicine as well as other combined medicines.

The blocker is the most commonly used antihypertensive drug.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, China had over 33 million hypertension patients by last year, one in every three adults.
