Most fail homegrown science literacy test
ONLY about 17.3 percent of local residents have a good understanding of science, according to a measurement of public scientific literacy released on Tuesday.
Young adults under 30 did better than their older counterparts, with more than a quarter of them demonstrating science literacy.
It marked the nation's first self-designed measurement of scientific literacy. China had been using a US measuring system in the past 20 years, which was not quite in line with Chinese people's background and was considered too academic.
"Our test is more practical than the US one," said Li Jianmin, a leading scientist of the new measuring system. He said "the US measuring system focused too much on the understanding of scientific theories and terms instead of practical ability in using science to solve problems."
