New machine makes blood donation easier

SHANGHAI people can donate platelet at their workplaces or schools as the city became the first city in the country to collect blood with portable platelet agitators outside the blood center.

Employees of Lock&Lock Group, a South Korean manufacturer of food containers, donated their blood in their Shanghai factory in Minhang District today.

"We used to spend at least half a day to donate blood at the Shanghai Blood Center," said Ahn Byung Kook, Lock&Lock Shanghai general manager. "Sending medical staff and equipment to our company can save donors trouble and attract more donors."

Officials at the Shanghai Blood Center said platelet donation is more complicated than whole blood donation which can be done with a normal blood-collecting vehicle. To make it convenient for donors, the center decided to reach donors with portable platelet agitators.
