No anthrax cases found in Shanghai

SHANGHAI has not discovered cases of anthrax, an acute contagious disease found both animals and humans, after people in Jiangsu and Liaoning provinces were diagnosed of the lethal disease in recent two weeks, Shanghai Health Bureau said.

Local agricultural officials said they have intensified supervision of livestock farms. The city's industrial and commercial bureau is closely keeping an eye on the situation.

Since August 3, two patients in Lianyungang, Jiangsu were confirmed to be infected by anthrax and another five were on observation as they took part in butchering a sick cow.

On Monday, seven people in Liaoning were diagnosed of anthrax infection.

Reports on anthrax have stoked fear among the public. Jiangsu health officials rejected a widespread rumor on the Internet that the epidemic was spreading in Suzhou which imported 570 cows infected with anthrax.
