Officials updated on AIDS efforts

LOCAL health officials visited HIV carriers and medical staff at Putuo District Center for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday, World AIDS Day, to learn about clinical practices and HIV/AIDS intervention measures being carried out in the city.

One HIV carrier told city officials that those with the virus have enjoyed many favorable policies on HIV/AIDS control and treatment, but social stigma and discrimination remain a major obstacle.

Districts of Putuo and Zhabei and Chongming County this year were named a national pilot region for HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

Shanghai kicked off a community-based AIDS intervention program for the at-risk population of HIV/AIDS this year.

By October, the health authorities have fulfilled investigation on local at-risk venues and people.

Health staff have launched education to 100,000 staff at 36,000 small hotels, karaokes bars and barber shops, and some 300,000 staff at 4,600 big entertainment venues and saunas.

HIV intervention for mother-to-infant infection has been carried out properly in the city, the 221 community health centers checking 91,535 pregnant women in the first 11 months this year and detecting 12 women positive for HIV.

Voluntary HIV tests have become an important method for HIV/AIDS detection in Shanghai.

Local 40 voluntary testing spots gave 12,603 checks from January to October this year. They found 181 people with the HIV virus, 38 percent more people than a year ago.
