Pharmacists launch trial home-service scheme

MORE than 100 local pharmacists are taking part in a trial scheme to help people with chronic health problems manage their medication.
Under the program organized by the Shanghai Pharmacist Association, the chemists will build databases of the drugs being taken by people in their community and make regular visits — either weekly or monthly — to their homes.
According to Zheng Chunyuan, director of the trade group, much of the focus of the scheme will be on elderly people, many of whom have chronic diseases that require long-term medication.
“Some old people lack understanding of how to use medicines and are sometimes duped into buying tonics that they see advertised,” Zheng said.
“The aim of the scheme is to provide them with useful support,” he said.
The pharmacists will also carry out basic health checks, but will not be allowed to sell any medication that has not already been prescribed, according to Zheng.
All of the pharmacists in the trial work for Shanghai Laobaixing Pharmacy Co.
