Pregnant women having second child increase after loosening of strict one-child policy

AFTER the further loosening of the strict one-child policy, pregnant women having a second child has risen from previously 16 to 23 percent now at the the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Fudan University, doctors said today.

The government has loosened the strict one-child policy to allow all couples, no matter they are respectively single child of their families or not, to have a second baby.

Shanghai International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital said couples over 35 years old have covered up to 40 percent of those coming for in vitro fertilization, up from the 25 percent previously.

“In the recent six months, we saw a quick increase of couples at their late 30s and 40s came to the hospital for pre-pregnancy and prenatal consultation and check,” said Dr Li Xiaotian, vice president of the hospital. “With the rise of women pregnant with a second child, we also saw an increase of critical cases due to scarred womb and other risks as many women delivered their first baby by surgery.”

Doctors said women aged 35 or older are considered as risky for pregnancy and delivery and proper medical test before pregnancy are important to ensure health and safety of both mother and child.
