Pudong community offers free diabetes screening to all who live there
RESIDENTS from China and abroad living at Lianyang Community in the Pudong New Area can receive regular free diabetes screening at the community's neighborhood health center for early detection and early treatment.
Lianyang Community is home to some 50,000 residents including over 8,000 expatriates.
To better help residents defend against diabetes, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation and the Shanghai Charity Foundation jointly launched a community walking map to inform residents of the distance and calories consumed between different residential complexes and the central square of the community.
The map also shows the relationship between sports and blood glucose levels to encourage people to prevent and control diabetes through daily exercise.
There are more than 114 million people with diabetes in China -- 11.6 percent of the adult population. Chinese patients represent a third of the total diabetes patients in the world.
