Report highlights unhealthy lifestyles

UNHEALTHY eating habits and a lack of exercise have been blamed for making obesity, thyroid diseases and liver fat the top three health problems afflicting Shanghai’s white-collar workers, according to a report.

Shanghai Foreign Service Company analyzed health check reports for over 400,000 employees and found that 94.9 percent of people had health problems in 2015, the highest in five years. The figure in 2011 was 87.6 percent.

The most serious problem was obesity, with 33.7 percent needing to shed some weight. This was followed by thyroid problems at 23.7 percent and liver fat at 17.1 percent. Osteoporosis and lobular hyperplasia of the breast are also on the rise.

According to Shanghai Foreign Service Company’s health management center, unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary living are the major factors contributing to obesity, liver fat and high blood uric acid, which is more common in males.

Though 77 percent of those surveyed said they had begun taking measures to tackle their health problems, only 38 percent regularly participated in sports activities.

The health center advised white-collar workers to avoid food that is rich in fat and protein, avoid sitting for too long and stop staying up late.

The Shanghai Foreign Service Company provides human resource services to over 25,000 enterprises.
