Science journal sets up office in city

ONE of the world's leading science journals has established a presence in Shanghai, the first time UK-based Nature Publishing Group has based full-time editors on the Chinese mainland.

NPG said two editors would be working in the downtown Shanghai office for Nature Communications, an online journal publishing research into biological, physical, chemical and earth sciences, due to China's rising scientific influence.

Ed Gerstner has moved to Shanghai from London in the role of executive editor, China.com.cn reported, and will work with the assistant editor, Huang Congcong.

Gerstner and Huang are part of a global team of editors for Nature Communications, and the Shanghai team is expected to expand over the coming months.

Launched in April 2010, Nature Communications has seen submissions grow rapidly. In Shanghai yesterday, Gerstner said setting up an office on the mainland was an obvious move considering the substantial growth in quality and quantity of research that is coming out of China.
