Shanghai hospital offers endovascular surgery courses
Only about 230 hospitals in China can perform endovascular surgery and fewer than 1,500 doctors are trained in the minimally invasive surgery that accesses many body regions via major blood vessels, Shanghai doctors said today.
The newly developed surgical procedure has been used to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases through arteries and veins over the human body except for brain and heart blood vessels, they said.
"The skills of professionals in endovascular surgery vary from region to region. The country needs a unified education and training platform," said Dr Fu Weiguo of Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, which teamed up with leading hospitals in other cities to offer an endovascular course to Chinese doctors.
"Endovascular surgery is a revolution. It can reduce the trauma of the patient, shorten recovery time, and improve survival rate, especially of vascular diseases that are more prevalent in Asian countries," Fu said.
